Berkeley’s Chemical Biology Summer Research Opportunity Program

SUMMER 2007 APPLICATIONS DUE FEBUARY 1, 2007

Why Chemical Biology?
This summer research program allows undergraduates a chance to see what chemical biology is all about.  This relatively new field continues to demonstrate the power of using chemistry to answer questions in biology.  Although working at this interface is not new in science, formal training in the strengths of both disciplines is new.  As one of the few universities in the country to offer a chemical biology program, Berkeley works at the forefront of science to develop scientists trained to research with this dual focus paradigm.

The Chemical Biology SROP Program:
This summer program for undergraduates will provide students with the opportunity to participate in laboratory research and learn first-hand about this exciting area that bridges the disciplines of chemistry and biology.  Students will choose the lab from the approximately 35 Chemical Biology laboratories in one of four departments.  They will work with faculty to select a project of interest and gain valuable lab experience.

Program Benefits:

  • Travel reimbursement up to $500 for travel to and from Berkeley for out of town participants
  • Research Stipend of $ 3,000 for completion of 8-week project
  • On campus room and board
  • Optional evening GRE Prep course
  • 3 College credits for Chem 199, independent research

The program runs from June 3, 2007 through July 28, 2007. Students are required to work full time (40 hours per week), attend required meetings, and complete a poster and poster presentation about their research at the end of their project.  For information about available faculty mentors and labs available for research, please see Faculty list at http://cbgp.cchem.berkeley.edu/

Who is Eligible:
The emphasis of this program is to encourage underrepresented junior-year undergraduates to pursue independent research in chemical biology with top ranked faculty. The program strongly encourages applications from the following groups: Alaskan Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), American Indians, African Americans, Mexican Americans (Chicanos), Puerto Ricans, Filipino Americans, Latinos, students from low income families, first generation college students and women.  However, all undergraduates are eligible to apply and have an equal chance for acceptance based on interest, drive, and ability.

How to Apply:
Interested students should complete the SROP application with the special instructions noted below. Please follow instructions for Science applicants.
